SIBO Test Overview

If you experience frequent bloating, gas, abdominal pain, diarrhoea, or constipation, it could be due to Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO). The SIBO test is designed to detect bacterial overgrowth in the small intestine through a simple breath test that you can perform at home. Your sample will be sent to an ISO-certified lab for analysis.

What the Test Measures

The SIBO test measures hydrogen and methane levels in your breath. These gases are produced by bacteria in the small intestine when they ferment undigested carbohydrates. Elevated levels of hydrogen or methane suggest bacterial overgrowth, which can lead to uncomfortable gastrointestinal symptoms.

How the SIBO Test Works

To perform the test, you will drink a lactulose solution and collect breath samples at specific intervals throughout the day. These samples are then analysed to detect the presence of bacterial overgrowth. You will receive your results digitally, along with personalised recommendations for treatment if an imbalance is detected.

Symptoms of SIBO

SIBO is often linked to Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), and common symptoms include:

  • Bloating
  • Gas
  • Abdominal pain or cramps
  • Diarrhoea
  • Constipation

Left untreated, SIBO can lead to further complications, such as leaky gut, food intolerances, fatigue, and skin problems.

Preparing for the SIBO Test

To ensure accurate results, please follow these preparation guidelines:

2-4 Weeks Before:

  • Avoid testing if you have recently taken antibiotics or undergone specific medical procedures.

7 Days Before:

  • Stop using laxatives or acid-reducing medications.

48 Hours Before:

  • Discontinue probiotics and adhere to a restricted diet (e.g., plain chicken, white rice).

12 Hours Before:

  • Begin fasting, consuming only water.

1 Hour Before:

  • Avoid smoking, strenuous exercise, and brushing your teeth.

Who Should Take the SIBO Test?

The SIBO test is recommended for anyone with IBS symptoms, difficulties digesting carbohydrates, gluten intolerance, or recurring bloating, constipation, or abdominal discomfort. If these symptoms persist, the test can provide valuable insights into potential bacterial overgrowth.

Causes of SIBO

SIBO can develop due to structural issues in the small intestine, slowed digestion caused by surgery or illness, or the overuse of medications that disrupt the gut flora. Identifying SIBO early can help prevent further complications.

Treatment Options

If the test indicates SIBO, treatment options include antibiotics or herbal remedies. Your test report will provide detailed guidance on the appropriate course of action based on your results.
